Registering for this in-depth immersion program will advanced your knowledge towards an enhanced understanding the roots of medicine in Thailand to include influences from Theravada Buddhism, Ayurvedic principles, Hatha Yoga, Chinese Medicine, and the Indigenous Practices of the Tai People. ("Tai" refers to the ethnic group of people that once occupied a large portion of modern day Southern China and Northern Vietnam but today reside through that region, along a large migration path into modern day Thailand.)
"Thai" medicine as practiced today, which Thai Massage is part of, is a collection of various medicines as exposure to various bodies of knowledge influenced the Tai's understanding of their own health and way to become healthy..
While Thai Massage and Thai Medicine is often portrayed as Ayurveda/Indian Medicine, Chinese Medicine, or a combination of them all, participants in this program will gain an appreciation for the uniqueness of Thai Medicine while appreciating the influences of the medical theories from other parts of the world.
Theravada Buddhism making its way to the Tai people between 200BC - 200AD was the most influential to the culture and medical practices of the Tai's. Of all other influences experienced by the Tai, Theravada Buddhism had the single most important influence to the spiritual, cultural, and medical practices of the Tai's. Through this program, you will spend 2-days focused on understanding this layer of influence from an academic, historical, and practical perspective. Theravada Buddhist Philosophy and Practices will be taught.
During the Thai Medicine Theory portion of this immersion program, you will be exposed to an additional 1-day of Theravada Buddhist philosophy as it relates specifically to the development of Traditional Thai Medicine (TTM). In the remaining days of the course, you will learn the other influences that helped to develop TTM into what is currently practiced today. (See individual course description for more details.)
The first 7-days will be led by Dr. Pierce Salguero, Senior Instructor, Director of Tao Mountain, and the foremost researcher in the area of Traditional Thai Medicine and Buddhist Medicine. After living in Thailand for 5-years with 3 months at a Buddhist Monastery in the Isaan Region of Thailand, Dr. Salguero has published several books and articles on these topics. He's been a teacher of Thai Massage and Thai Medicine since 1997 where he studied and taught intensely at the Old Medicine Hospital in Chiang Mai, Thailand with the late Ajahn Sintorn Chaichakan. (Learn more about Dr. Pierce Salguero.)
The 7-days of in-depth classroom learning will be capped off with a 2-day Traditional Thai Medicine Symposium. We've gathered together the top names in the field to present various topics such as Thai herbal medicine preparation, ruesri dat ton, healing meditation, chanting and rituals, anatomy and Thai massage. The Symposium will expose each participant to a wide array of topics all opened up under the rubic of Traditional Thai Medicine where you will see the theories and discussions from the first 7-days of the immersion program alive and in practice with actual teachers and practitioners of these medical disciplines.
